Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
On the 20th of February 2021, a United Boeing 777-200, registration N772UA performing flight UA-328 from Denver,CO to Honolulu,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was in the initial climb out of Denver's runway 25 when the right hand engine's (PW4077) inlet separated associated with the failure of the engine. The crew declared Mayday reporting an engine failure. The aircraft stopped the climb at about 13000 feet, the crew requested to return to Denver after running the checklists. ATC offered any runway, they would make it happen. The aircraft returned to Denver for a safe landing on runway 26 about 23 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for a check by emergency services. Emergency services advised of an active fire within the right hand engine and extinguished the fire a few minutes later. The aircraft was subsequently towed off the runway to a remote parking stand, where passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. There were no injuries.
The engine inlet fell into the neighbourhood of Broomfield,CO, located about 16nm west of Denver near 13th and Elmwood Street, the debris also struck through the roof of an adjacent house.
Broomfield police reported that although debris impacted the neighbourhood and damaged a number of homes, there were no injuries on the ground. The debris field expands over a nautical mile.
Ground observers reported hearing the sound of an explosion like bang, smoke and saw the debris falling down. The aircraft continued flying.

Why would they land down wind with max landing fuel

Another example why we should be thankful for engineers. These engines are designed to contain most of the spinning mass in a blade off event. The pilot gets the praise in most of these events but without the engineering in our modern world most outcomes would have no happy endings.

I couldn't imagine being in any of there shoes. Good thing they had a well experienced pilot. I think people forget these pilots lives are on the line just as much as the passengers and they will do what ever it takes to go home safe.

The plain truth is that Boeing main priority is being WOKE now hiring based off of skin color and not talent, skills, not experience. Quality control, manufacturing, and servicing planes is now last priority.

I heard about this during maintenance pms with air frame mechanics. They said somebody, among the mechanics, tried to sabotage it.

Thank you Captain Joe for the tremendous explanation and analysis you have made. You are that excellent and Brilliant person that different individuals would like to listen to, and fetch the exact information needed. I always refer most of my pals to listen to your tutorials. Indeed you are the best as you have always been, but this video has definitely taught me that you are an Aviation Icon .

I was diagnosed with herpes 7 month ago the Doctor told me there was no cure to this infection, l was only given antiviral Herpevex Acyclovir 800mg for 5days, 5times daily, the doctor said it will not kill the virus ,only slowing it a bit from spreading to other part. l was on this for the past 4months no improvement. So there was a day l came across with a testimony from a friend, so l contacted this man on getting his herbal remedy for this infection, which l paid for and received medicine after a week and some days with instruction on how to take medicine attacked. I take medicine for 2weeks before going to the hospital for test...l can show to you now that am herpes free! 😊😊. I fully believed there is a herbal cure for herpes now. l am also using this means to inform you out there to get yours as well!.. contact Dr. Robinson via Email:(drrobinsonherbalremedy1@gmail.com)

A quick question about the runway they landed on please? Why did they select runway 26 when it - and 4 others were only 12,000 feet - instead of selecting 34L/16R which would have given them an extra 4,000 feet being 16,000 feet long? Admittedly, we don't hear what the wind conditions were, but looking at the local conditions on that day, there really didn't seem to be too much of an wind influence no matter which runway, so wouldn't the extra 4,000 feet have been helpful? I know that for myself, I would always select to have extra runway length if the wind speed/direction is not going to be too detrimental a factor....... Which of course raises the question about what is the 'tipping point' for you in commercial aircraft in selecting length of runway over wind speed/direction?

Keep two for that very reason you stated. Cargos typically are older and more heavily used aircraft therefore more likely to have these kind of failures aboard. Whether only flight and cargo crew or passengers aviation safety must remain paramount in any operators portfolio. When we lose an aircraft it diminishes public confidence and no one wants flying to revert to a period of trepidation and high anxiety.

With computer helping one could say - if the system does not notice by itself - "right engine is on fire" and the system itself runs the checklist. And the computer informs you "we are littlebit heavy for landing, would you like to run the checklist" .. "yes" .. and the machine does itself. The cockpit is full of switches like from the analog era even though it is run fly-by-wire. Yes. It would take time for the AI to be real AI.

The fire extinguisher doesn’t go into the “turbine “ it goes into the engine nacelle, since that had been blown away the extinguisher won’t have any effect. That is why the fire didn’t go out. Otherwise good video.

I could only imagine 1 pilot plane flying when technology adavance to full autonomous flying by computer and then the human pilot would play the backup, surveillance and redundancy role in cockpit. And that off cause first in cargo flights rather than others.

Very Cool. I've never heard the chatter from an incident like this. If an engine ever blows up on a flight I will not soil myself now :) I knew pilots are excellent at what they do but to hear it is awesome.

Same jet engine that cause the second United 777-200 that flew from Hawaii. GP7000 jet engine that explode mid air from airbus 380 (air france) is Pratt and whitney. Looks like Pratt & whitney is losing against GE and Rolls Royce.

Captain Joe, is the ATC radio clearer in the aircraft or just as hit and miss like the recordings? I must be getting hold because I loose a lot of diction in the messages.

Great job all around, I hope the airlines keep at least two pilots in the cockpit. When issues like this,or even less than this happens, the extra pilot can mean the difference between life and death.

Reminds me of a old joke. Two idiots are flying from New York to London when one engine flames out halfway across the Atlantic. The captain say this plane can fly safely with one engine and since we're halfway there we'll continue on but there will be a five hour delay. So one idiot says to the other... If the other engine goes we'll be up here all night.

Joe, nice job as always. I just have two quick (tiny) critiques. When you mentioned the turbulence at the beginning you said FL140, but in the US (unlike the lower, variable ones in Europe), the TA is 18,000 feet, so the turbulence went from 14,000 feet to FL220. Also, in the Boeings (757, 767, 777) the engines aren’t called “one” and “two”, they’re called “Left” and “Right.” Keep up the great work!
